High-feed CNC milling removes material efficiently by using a shallow axial depth of cut and a high table feed. The key is chip thinning. When radial and axial engagement are controlled, the carbide end mill can carry load in a more favorable direction, reducing side pressure while increasing roughing productivity.

This strategy is useful for mold bases, steel plates and parts where fast roughing is needed before semi-finishing. However, it requires a rigid machine, stable holder and a tool geometry designed for high-feed cutting. If the cutter is pushed too deep or the toolpath corners are not controlled, vibration and edge wear can rise quickly.

How to apply high-feed milling

Use predictable engagement, avoid abrupt corner overload and monitor spindle load during the first part. High-feed milling works best when chip thickness, tool overhang and workholding are treated as one system.
