Minimum quantity lubrication, often called MQL, delivers a small amount of lubricant directly to the cutting zone. In CNC milling, MQL can reduce friction, support chip evacuation and keep the machining area cleaner than heavy flood coolant. For carbide end mills, the benefit depends on correct nozzle direction, suitable material and stable cutting parameters.

MQL is often useful for aluminum, some steels and clean production environments where coolant management is important. It is not a universal replacement for flood coolant. Deep pockets, heavy cuts and materials that trap heat may still require stronger cooling or through-tool coolant. The best decision depends on chip shape, tool temperature and surface finish.

How to use MQL effectively

Aim the nozzle at the cutting edge before chips leave the flute. Keep tool engagement predictable and avoid chip packing. If chips become dark or the tool sounds unstable, review feed rate, radial engagement and air pressure before increasing speed.
