English: Thread Milling Adds Flexibility to CNC Machining
CNC thread milling uses a rotating carbide thread mill and circular interpolation to create internal or external threads. Compared with tapping, thread milling can offer better control in blind holes, large threads and difficult materials. If a thread mill breaks, it is often easier to remove than a broken tap, which can reduce scrap risk on high-value parts.
A carbide thread mill can machine different thread diameters with the same pitch, depending on tool size and program strategy. This flexibility is useful for low-volume parts, repair work and components with expensive material. The process also creates smaller chips, which helps in deep or blind threaded holes.
Programming and quality checks
Accurate pitch, thread depth and toolpath compensation are essential. Operators should inspect thread fit with proper gauges and confirm that the toolpath direction matches the desired thread hand. Stable machine interpolation improves thread surface quality and repeatability.
