CNC milling carbon fiber composites requires a different approach from metal cutting. The material is abrasive, layered and sensitive to edge damage. Without proper tool selection and dust extraction, machining can cause delamination, poor edge quality and contamination inside the machine enclosure.
Diamond-coated carbide end mills are often used because carbon fiber wears cutting edges quickly. Tool geometry should shear the fibers cleanly instead of pulling them from the matrix. Vacuum extraction, sealed machining and careful chip-dust management protect both the process and the equipment.
Improving composite edge quality
Use stable clamping, sharp tools and controlled feed. If fibers fray at the edge, review tool wear, cutting direction and support under the laminate. Good dust extraction and low runout help produce cleaner composite parts.
