Graphite electrode CNC milling is common in EDM mold manufacturing because graphite can hold fine detail and machines faster than many metallic electrode materials. The challenge is abrasive graphite dust. Without proper extraction, dust can affect machine components, tool holders and workshop cleanliness. A sealed machining area and effective dust collection are important process requirements.
Tool selection also matters. Diamond-coated carbide end mills are often preferred because graphite is abrasive and can wear ordinary cutting edges quickly. For fine ribs and small details, tool runout and edge condition should be checked carefully. Stable high-speed machining can produce crisp electrode geometry and reduce manual polishing.
Quality control points
Use light finishing passes, avoid excessive tool pressure and inspect delicate features before removing the electrode from the fixture. Good dust control and sharp tooling help maintain EDM electrode accuracy.
